My Work Protecting Mountain Regions of the World

I work with a number of national and international organizations to help communicate and publicize their efforts, and lend expertise in bridging divides between mountain managers and mountain stakeholders. These include:

International Union for Conservation of Nature / World Commission on Protected Areas: IUCN-WCPA Mountains Biome

International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation

The American Alpine Club

California Recreation Resource Advisory Committee

I focus on helping land managers, agencies, and governments find ways to transform their role from "protecting mountains of the world FROM mountain user groups" into the much more effective one of "protecting mountains of the world WITH mountain user groups" .

I believe that successful efforts in mountain protection require transformation by all mountain stakeholders, recognizing that all who enjoy mountains have a role to play in their long-term protection. So I also work to establish long-term collaborations between stakeholders and managers of mountain regions.

For example, in Yosemite National Park I am helping to implement Mountain Stewardship Projects that bring Climbers and Rangers together to better understand, catalog, and protect the special species on the park's soaring granite cliffs.
